Biodiversity conservation and community development in Transylvania

The ADEPT Foundation project was financed by Innovation Norway (Government of Norway), and by Orange Romania through its corporate social responsibility partnership with ADEPT Foundation.

The ADEPT Foundation has carried out a variety of rural development activities in southeast Transylvania, especially in the Tarnava Mare area, always resposning to local problems and demands: helped farmers to access European funds (the number of farmers receiving agri-environmental support in the area is 7 times higher than in other similar areas); trained farmers to improve milk quality, thus doubling the price of milk paid to farmers in the area; and held fairs and farmers markets in urban areas, promoting traditional and local small producers.

A panel of judges organised by the EU Directorate General for Agriculture & Rural Development selected 12 projects out of 118 submitted for the final phase of the competition, which was decided by live voting by the audience. Each project was briefly presented to the audience consisting of EU officials, and representatives of press, farmers associations and NGOs from all over Europe.

The jury described the ADEPT Foundation’s project as "an inspirational campaign, based a deep analysis and understanding of the needs of small-scale farmers in Transylvania. A best-practice example at its best!".

This award is a recognition of the effectiveness of ADEPT Foundation’s rural development and biodiversity conservation activities, which it has been implementing for 7 years in the remarkable nature-rich farmed landscapes of Transylvania.
