Welcome to the website of Fundatia ADEPT, a not-for-profit organisation whose aim is

protecting the rich biodiversity of Transylvania and using it to benefit local communities.

Fundatia ADEPT

Fundatia ADEPT brings together Romanian and wider European expertise to carry out innovative nature conservation and rural development projects that are firmly rooted in local communities. 

We work with farmers, local communities, universities, other NGOs, and government at all levels in order to solve the range of problems threatening the survival of the remarkable landscape of Southern Transylvania and of the small-scale farming communities living within it. 

Fundatia ADEPT began working in 2002 as a response to

• the immediate threat to the survival of the landscape of Southern Transylvania, perhaps the most extensive working High Nature Value Farmed landscape in lowland Europe, and therefore of European if not global importance
• the need to involve local communities in its preservation. The exceptional biodiversity of the area is partly due to its management by farmers, and can only be preserved by continued traditional management.

Saving this area is of great importance not only for its own sake - the species and habitats, the agricultural system in harmony with them, and the livelihoods of the many thousands of farmers who live there are all under immediate threat – but also for what we can learn from it about saving or restoring similar areas in Europe. 

Fundatia ADEPT is carrying out an integrated programme linking economic and social benefits with biodiversity conservation, and raising local capacity for good management in the future.

This can be summed up by conservation of biodiversity – sustainable use of natural resources – equitable sharing of benefits.
